Heme oxygenase-1 promotes granuloma development and protects against dissemination of mycobacteria. Laboratory Investigation. doi:10.1038/labinvest.2012.125. Vol. 92 1541-52.

This study for the first time revealed the role of host gene HO1 in the formation of organized granuloma structures, a cardinal aspect of TB disease and virulence. This has led to follow up studies at NIH to evaluate HO-1 induction as a marker to distinguish different stages of clinical TB.
